Vauxhall is the UK’s oldest surviving car company and was founded by Scottish engineer Alexander Wilson in Vauxhall, London, in 1857. Originally called Alex Wilson and Company, the firm built pumps and marine engines.

In 1903 Vauxhall’s first car model was manufactured. The car originally had a 5 horsepower engine with 2 forward gears, no reverse gear and steered using a tiller similar to that used on ships. Later models produced in the following year were fitted with a steering wheel and reverse gear.

Today Vauxhall sits under the umbrella of the French Car Manufacturer Group PSA, which is a parent of Peugeot, Citoën and DS. Vauxhall’s vehicle models are identical to the Opel brand, but the Vauxhall brand is exclusively sold in the UK and Ireland, and has a portfolio that suits the needs of a vast range of needs.
