Mitsubishi’s origins can be traced back to 1870 when Yataro Iwasaki established a shipping firm for repairing aging steam ships in Japan. The company played a critical role in the evolution of Japan’s industrial sectors after Yataro’s brother, son and nephew expanded into a wide array of industries including automobiles, coal mining and electrical equipment, turning the company into a huge conglomerate. Over time the company grew larger and larger, but was eventually broken up after the second world war into separate entities.
Mitsubishi Motors was founded as part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1970, and today is the sixth largest car manufacturer in Japan.
